Shares of Adani Power, which have more than halved from 52-week high levels, also saw buying of 16,731 shares by MFs. Similarly, fund managers also bought the dip in Adani Transmission which is down over 78% from peak.

"Bad news has shifted from the US to Europe. The refusal of Credit Suisse’s largest shareholder Saudi National Bank to infuse more equity sent the stock plummeting by 30% thereby impacting the European Bank Index which sharply corrected by 8.4%. India VIX marginally moved up by 0.46% from 16.22 to 16.29 levels on Wednesday. Volatility is quoting near the highest levels of the last 28 trading sessions thus giving overall grip to bears in the market, suggest experts.

On Wednesday, GNFC shares ended at Rs 529.30 on the NSE and were up by Rs 4.10 or 0.77% despite a lacklustre trade in the broader markets. Meanwhile, the benchmark indices BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty have been in a falling trend over the past five trading sessions on the back of twin banking disasters in the US.

ET looks at some of the stock recommendations by analysts of late. These companies are expected to return between 19 % and 37 % as per analysts’ price targets.

They said the bank could access liquidity from the central bank if needed. The moves follow the collapse of U.S. lenders Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank in recent days which have sent financial markets on a roller-coaster ride.

Stocks that were in focus include names like Gujarat Pipavav Port which rose nearly 2% to hit a fresh 52-week high, Sun Pharma Advanced Research which tumbled over 5% to a fresh 52-week low and Hindalco which pared gains but closed in the green on Wednesday.

"The Fed has a very difficult policy decision to make at next week's meeting," said Paul Ashworth, chief North America economist at Capital Economics, which for now still leans towards the Fed raising interest rates by a quarter percentage point. "It is a very close call... the risk of a full-blown contagion remains, and a lot can happen in the week until the announcement."

U.S.-listed shares of Credit Suisse hit a record low, after its largest investor said it could not provide more financing to the bank, starting a rout in European lenders and pressuring U.S. banks as well.

Credit Suisse, which is battling to recover from a string of scandals that have undermined the confidence of investors and clients, was the latest casualty to be caught up in a crisis of confidence after the collapse of SVB last week.

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) have net sold shares worth Rs 1,271 crore on Wednesday. DIIs, on the other hand, bought shares worth Rs 1,823 crore.

Japanese promoter company Sumitomo Wiring Systems will likely sell 3.4% stake in Samvardhana Motherson International Ltd through a block deal on Thursday, according to reports.

The March quarter is also traditionally the strongest for cement companies in India because of demand from the construction and infrastructure segments, and analysts expect this trend to play out this time as well, anticipating a volume growth of about 8-10% sequentially. The volume growth will also be conducive in shoring up the operating profit as it lowers fixed costs, analysts said. The March quarter accounts for 27-35% of the cement sold during a year.

THL Zinc Ventures, a wholly owned subsidiary of India-listed Vedanta Ltd (VDL), is negotiating with global lenders including JP Morgan, Barclays, Standard Chartered Bank and Deutsche Bank to lower their asking rate. The loan - talks with banks started a month back - was expected to be raised at the secured overnight financing rate or SOFR+500 bps. The lenders have given a term sheet at SOFR+800 bps for the 3-3.5-year loan, said the people cited above. SOFR is currently at 4.55%.

Bankers are not too enthusiastic about the recovery chances from the account. "EPC companies such as these typically have a lot of pending receivables from the government, which invariably have some counterclaims. So recoveries are very difficult as these companies have very little assets that can be monetised," said a second person aware of the company's position.

As per the payment schedule approved by NCLT, the Swan Energy-Hazel Mercantile team had to pay ₹200 crore to lenders, ₹65 crore towards CIRP cost and ₹10 crore to trade creditors and employees. While brokers collect this fee on behalf of the exchanges from clients, sources said many firms have been retaining excess of these amounts that have not been transferred to the bourses. Though there are no rules that state brokers must return the excess amount collected from clients, they may be treading a regulatory twilight zone.

In a chaotic day of trading, quotes for one-year credit default swaps were considerably more expensive than the offers for longer durations as lenders tried to give themselves a near-term shield from their exposure to the lender, the people said.

In an exchange filing on Wednesday, the company said it had received emails dated March 14 from the BSE and NSE regarding freezing shares of 21 promoter entities. Patanjali Ayurved, the single-largest promoter shareholder with 39.4% stake, and Acharya Balkrishna are among the promoters whose holdings have been frozen.

The NSE Nifty fell 71.15 points, or 0.4%, to close at 16,972.15. BSE's Sensex declined 344.29 points, or 0.6%, to end at 57,555.90. Both indices shuttled between gains and losses during the trading session after opening firm.

Short-term traders can look to buy the stock and the possible target could be towards Rs 2,500 levels, suggested experts. The stock price is down over 2% in a week and more than 6% in a month.

U.S. Treasury yields plummeted, with traders now expecting equal chances of a 25-basis-point rate hike and a pause at the Fed's March meeting.
